Chapter 5

“So, that’s it, then? We pretend nothing happened and go on with our lives?” I asked as Juliana and I watched our mother walk arm-in-arm with Officer Tangent to his patrol car. “Four hours of my life gone.” I snapped my fingers. “Just like that, and for what?”

Juliana placed a hand on my shoulder. “To protect ourselves. If there’s anything I’ve learned from being a member of law enforcement, it’s to trust the process.”

I pulled away from her. “First of all, you’re not a member of law enforcement. Secondly, what process? You know we never have a plan. This is our mother we’re talking about. Since when has she ever taken a minute to think about the consequences of what she does?”

Our mother turned her head in our direction as if she’d heard what I’d said.

“She can’t hear us, can she?” I asked.

Juliana shrugged. “Honestly, I don’t know anymore. Every day there’s something new going on with her.” She pointed behind us. “Don’t look now, but it looks like your ex is exiting stage left.”

I couldn’t help but look. He was the whole reason all of this had begun.

“Bye, girls,” he said with a wave. “I’ll see you around town, I guess.” He stopped at the front door.

Juliana’s breath caught in her throat.

“Stay calm. He doesn’t remember a thing.” I hoped the spell my mother had put on him and Officer Tangent would hold up against the pressure.

“You know, I can’t help but think I’m forgetting something,” Liam said.

I swallowed hard. “Really? I don’t know what you could possibly forget. You told us everything you needed to tell us.” I walked over to him to usher him out the door, but he planted his feet in the doorway. “Oh, I know what I wanted to ask you.”

I couldn’t breathe, but I didn’t want to let on that something was wrong.

“This might sound like a crazy idea, but do you think you could do me a favor? No pressure or anything, but I thought I’d ask,” he said.

I glanced at Juliana. Her face was a white as snow. “Oh, I would but I don’t know if I’ll have time. I have to leave for L.A. soon.”

He lifted a brow. “You do? Is your dad okay?”

Juliana exhaled loudly. “Woo! You lucked out on that one.” She patted Liam’s shoulder as she rushed by us and headed up the stairs. “See you on the other side, champ. Glad to see you’re feeling better.”

He knitted his brows. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

I shrugged. ‘Nothing. Ignore her. So, yeah, my dad is fine. Great, even. I’m not going to Los Angeles to see him. I have an interview.”

His jaw clenched.

“Not for a job,” I said. “I have to interview someone else.”

“Interview them for what?”

I was surprised he cared. He’d never shown much interest in what I did for a living before. He thought it was like a hobby. He never understood why someone would pay me to write an advice column when there were internet gurus on YouTube and other platforms who’d do it for free.
